This piece was inspired by a trip to Japan with pylons juxtaposed against a beautiful natural landscape. Lottie naturally dyed skeins which were wound onto cones and then perns for the shuttles before being woven on the Jacquard TC2 loom. Lottie used an Ikat method for the Madder dyed yarn to create a gradient in the colour. An exhausted Logwood dye was used to achieve the grey colour, when naturally dyeing with Logwood; a purple colour is usually achieved,  but due to this dye being exhausted it came out grey. Lottie is conscious about the amount of waste produced by the fashion and textile industry already, so therefore tries to minimise the amount of waste produced within her textiles practice.  Lottie decided to utilise the Logwood dyed yarn as she was happy with the colour even though it was not what she was expecting.

Inspiration for Jacquard Piece, Photograph - Lottie Whyman

Lottie took a series of photographs using 35mm film when in Japan and decided to create a range of paper collages using the photographs to develop ideas for the Jacquard piece.
